Assuming you have cable, Hulu, Roku, Apple TV or any other streaming services out there, you may have heard of a little show on ABC called ‘Cristela‘. If you don’t know about it, this should catch you up:
So what’s the big deal? Did you read the article?! ‘Cristela’ is going down in TV history as the first major network show to be created, produced, written and starring a Latina actress. Those are a lot of titles for one person! Add to that the fact that the writing team was comprised solely of Latino talent, and I’m sure you can deduce just what makes the creation, and now cancellation, of this show such a significant piece of entertainment industry history.
Before I go any further, I will go ahead and say that ‘Cristela’ did not resonate with me at all, so the cancellation doesn’t come as a total surprise.
But just because the humor didn’t land on me doesn’t mean it didn’t tickle the funny bones of millions of others (it did) or that I don’t have a great deal of respect for the show. Cristela Alonzo has done something no one else has! The show is a HUGE positive step in adding diversity to the talent both on-camera and behind the scenes, and the fact that the show got cancelled doesn’t negate its importance and relevance to our modern culture. But Tinseltown is judgemental and slow to change, and I would hate for networks and producers to adopt the attitude of ‘this show didn’t get as many views as we’d like, therefore we won’t invest in any more Latino-centered shows for a while’. Latino viewers are some of the largest consumers of media in the U.S. and we need more of ‘us’ on the screen to represent how things actually are out in the real world. Hopefully with the growing success of this season’s ‘Jane the Virgin‘, Cristela and her writing team will be able to go on to create something new, perhaps in a more forgiving format.
Much to my surprise while exploring Hulu a few days ago, I stumbled upon an interesting find: my play, which was turned into a movie, is now available to be viewed on Hulu!
That’s right, “Love Overboard” is now available for your Hulu viewing pleasure! To be honest, when I first saw it on the suggested videos, I laughed. Then I panicked. “Love Overboard” was filmed in front of a live audience in the midst of a run of performances, and I had NEVER watched it before. Emotions ran high during this tour – and with live theater, it’s very hit or miss really – sometimes you have a great night performing, others you’re not at the top of your game.
After watching it, my performance was ‘aight and not as bad as I thought it would be! I know we are our own worst critics, but I’m happy to say that I’ve come a long way since.
Life has taken over! I have a new show called ‘Gringa Latina’ premiering tomorrow on YouTube (and on www.gringalatina.com but that hasn’t launched yet). Please take a few minutes to check out the trailer here:
I’m back folks! Ok, so I didn’t actually go anywhere, but I haven’t been spending much time on my site, and for good reason! For starters, I’ve been hanging out over at Sassy Mama in LA and loving it. But mainly, I’ve been focusing on me, myself and I – which roughly translates to my career. Last summer I was really inspired by someone in my life. You know, one of those things that by virtue of being around them and seeing them do their thing makes you want to step it up a notch. Yeah, that sort of thing. So I started writing creatively again and thus developed a concept for a TV show, and after consulting with and soft pitching it to my team, made it my sole focus over the past few months. That concept went from fledgeling idea, to scripted and shot … and is now going into editing. So yeah, I kinda sorta became an executive producer. The next steps (post editing) are still up in the air as we’re in the process of scheduling a few meetings with networks, so we’ll see exactly where my baby ends up! I can tell you that it’s a comedy, and I’ll leave you with that…and this:
It has recently come to my attention that my TV show ‘East Los High’ has been picked up as a Hulu Exclusive Series and will will start airing on Hulu starting June 3rd! I play a doctor on this show based on the relationships and growing pains of teens coming of age in East L.A. Please keep up with the show on the following social media channels and tune in when it airs!
Today is Thursday, I have tonsilitis, and 2 weeks ago I was invited as a VIP guest of ‘The Talk’ on CBS. That makes this a recap post . . . or a Sesame Street Episode (brought you by the letter ‘T’)!!
In case the clip doesn’t play, here are me and ze’ bloggers:
We got fancy skin care gifts:
I think someone told them I love to cook:
What I wore:
And how I feel today:
I’m being a real baby because I rarely get sick, so I don’t know what to do with myself! But, I guess I gotta deal with it and go workout now because I have a photoshoot for a magazine coming up in a few days. See ya!
I was called on by a producer friend to step in on a webseries that she was working on. I love the work that I do, especially when I know I’m going to be working with a top-notch production team so of course I jumped on board! I’ve been sworn to secrecy on this project so I thought I’d use this opportunity to show what things look like behind the scenes.
I’m back! The hiatus from my site was purely unintentional but necessary. At the end of 2012 I managed to break my laptop charger (which has yet to be replaced) and soon after I got caught up in the whirlwind of apartment hunting and moving. Needless to say, all that action left little time for writing.
And now it’s a new year and I couldn’t be more excited about things to come! I’m still settling into my new place in Beverly Hills and looking forward to pilot season. I’m also getting back into the gym next week to start prepping to hit the competition stage again! In the past few weeks I’ve managed to lose a bit of muscle which is a big no-no for me. Fortunately the holidays weren’t full of overindulgence so I’m confident that I’ll bounce back fairly quickly.
On the good news front, I’ve just become a Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador and am looking forward to representing and working with other athletically inclined women!
I also found out today that ‘Love Overboard‘ will be airing on BET this Sunday January 6 at 11:30 PM EST! Tune in if you didn’t get to watch the play when we toured in 2009.
I gotta get back to unpacking, but I leave you with this:
A still frame from ‘The Bathroom Diaries’ which will be airing in late 2013. More details to come!
One of the best parts of being an actor – besides being able to explore the psyche of and become a new character – is working with and meeting new people. From the cast to the crew, working in entertainment surrounds you with people you probably wouldn’t ‘normally’ meet. After meeting said people, you usually get to hang with them at events such as wrap parties, which is where all the real fun begins.
Last night saw the official conclusion of my latest project ‘East Los High‘. It’s a coming of age show about Latino youths in east L.A. Airing on Hulu, it’s going to make for a great viewing experience. Here are a few shots from last night’s event. Check back with me for more details soon!
